A little bit of magic recently happened in one family’s home in the United Kingdom. The family’s chocolate Labrador Retriever recently gave birth to a litter, and one of the puppies was green!
Mark and Elaine Cooper of Chorley said they were stunned when one of their Labrador’s pups came out green. They could not believe their eyes, and we have to admit, it looks unreal.
The Cooper’s two-year-old chocolate Labrador, Milly, recently went into labor and delivered five healthy puppies, one of which was a girl. The only girl was also the only pup who was green. Elaine Cooper said they thought the puppy was a black Labrador, but after Milly licked the puppy clean, they could see it was actually emerald green.
Veterinarians say that while it is rare, it can happen. They think the green fur is caused by the puppy being exposed to a substance in a canine’s placenta called biliverdin. It can stain the newborn puppy’s coat, but usually only lasts for the first couple of weeks and then gradually fades.
Mark and Elaine Cooper decided to name their green puppy Fifi, which is after the Shrek character, Princess Fiona. A suiting name! Here’s a video on Milly and her green pup:
Fifi was not only the one girl and the one green puppy, but she was also the smallest puppy. The Coopers said Fifi’s four brothers would get to the milk before her, but now she is the boss. Her brothers were named Ghost, Gizmo, Rover, and Bear.
Rover, who was the last born puppy, was named after Mark Cooper’s car. Elaine explained that Milly was having a difficult time delivering her last puppy, so they rushed her to the vet. Little Rover was born in the backseat. The Cooper’s are happy to report all five puppies are doing just fine.
