A Facebook event recently went viral with over 3 million people interested in going to Area 51 to see some aliens. The event started as a joke and no one expected that it will attract millions and millions of people around the world. To join the fun, a shelter in Oklahoma City decided to conduct an Area 51 inspired photo-shoot with the shelter animals.
Volunteers and staff at the OKC Animal Welfare thought it a great idea to join the Area 51 craze. They decided to conduct a photo-shoot inspired by the event. So the shelter animals will have a higher chance to be noticed and get adopted.
According to Laura Russo, a volunteer at the shelter. They often think of fun ways to help shelter animals get more attention in social media. So, when the idea of Area 51 came up, the staff tried their best to make it a success.
They had four volunteers- three dogs: Sam (3 months old), Piper, (3 years old) and Lady (3 years old). Also a small male kitten (no name yet). The staff dressed up these adorable animals and they made sure that they would be the cutest “Aliens” in Area 51.
The dogs had the time of their life posing for the camera. They knew how to wait for instructions patiently. On the other hand, the kitten seemed reluctant about the task.
The kitten didn’t like the foil hat on his head. The staff tried to fix it for his, but it ended up becoming the kitten’s collar instead.
The staff also included the other dogs staying at the kennels. They used a photo filter, which made it look like they were all in space.
After the photo-shoot, the shelter posted the photos on Facebook with the caption “Come storm our shelter.” Here’s the rest of the post:
The staff didn’t expect that their campaign would go viral. Aside from getting a lot of engagements on Facebook, the shelter also managed to scout for new owners for the shelter’s dogs and cats. In fact, 56 pets were adopted after the post spread all over the internet.
The Storm Area 51 event didn’t really happen. But, the shelter’s version took place. It helped a lot of dogs and cats find their new family and forever home. Hopefully, more people will notice these adorable creatures and decide to adopt them.
Thank you, OKC Animal Welfare for sharing these adorable photos!
