If you’re a dog owner, you probably know what agility training is all about. It’s a fast-growing dog sport that has grown very fast over the last couple of decades. This sport has become renowned due to the great benefits that are derived from this training.
If you’re planning on engaging your dog in this training, you need to check the guidelines stipulated below. They’ll give you important information as to how you can prepare.
The first thing that you need to keep in mind is the materials that are needed in developing the course. Assuming that you are operating with minimal space, you need to consider how you can effectively set-up a backyard course.
Some of the materials that you need include:
- Standard jumps
- Pause table
- Weave Poles
Having purchased those items, you need to remember that a basic agility course has several types of obstacles. We have taken an in-depth approach in explaining how to do each of the obstacles.
All you need here is a picnic bench as a dog walk. If you don’t have one, you can always construct it using 12-foot plywood supported by 2 cinderblocks.
You can create this using 10 to 15 ski poles supported in the ground. Keep in mind the fact that you need adequate space between the poles so that the dog can maneuver safely.
You can easily create this using cinderblock. Just stack them on top of one another and place some plywood on top. Of course, this will depend on the height of your dog. This should be adjusted accordingly.
You can purchase a collapsible tunnel which will act as a perfect obstacle for your dog. It needs to sit low on the ground and be stable.
You don’t have to buy one. You can just use an old coffee table as an agility table for your course. It needs to sit on a low level and be stable.
Just get yourself an old tire that is strung on a tree. This will create a perfect obstacle that will act as a tire jump. The opening should be big enough to accommodate the dog.
You can always build this using a long piece of wood and some pipes. Get a mixture of antiskid additive and some paint that will cover the board.
This will give you perfect traction as the dog walks on the board. Consider buying a large pipe. This should be placed in the center of the board. Also, make sure that you drill two holes on either side of the pipe.
It’s also advisable to attach a carriage bolt through each of the holes. This will help you while you are attaching it on the board. The next thing that you’ll need is to place some bolts inside the holes in the pipe. This will help you tighten the nuts on each of the bolts.
Having successfully created the obstacles, you’re now ready to work on the training.
How to conduct the basic agility training
Remember, we want the dog to weave, climb, jump, and tunnel through the obstacles. Both the dog and its handler are expected to go through the obstacles and maneuver accordingly.
The winner of the race is always determined by a careful evaluation of the time they spent on the course and the number of faults made. It’s therefore important to make sure that you spend the least amount of time.
You need to keep in mind the fact that agility training transcends the basic training. This requires dedication on your own part.
