Soldiers live a dangerous life especially when they get deployed overseas in hostile countries. There’s no guarantee that they would come back home alive and uninjured.
Christy Gardner is a retired Sergeant for the US Army. During her deployment overseas, she experienced an attack that changed her life forever.
When Christy woke up several days after the incident, she stated that she couldn’t recall any details about the attack. She woke up with skull fractures along with other internal injuries including spinal cord damage that left her paralyzed from the knees down.
The attack nearly cost Christy her life.
For Christy, it wasn’t the attack that proved to be the worst thing that she experienced. But it was the life she was about to live after the attack.
The injuries she sustained left her unable to walk and suffered from seizures due to the damage she had on her brain. She needed to learn everything again, including to talk.
She eventually retired from service due to her injuries and went home. Paired with a service dog named Moxie, Christy soon found that Moxie will help her more than she would expect.
Before the incident, Christy was an active person. She loved sports and loved the outdoors. Because she was no longer able to do the things she used to do. She suffered from deep depressions and had thoughts about committing suicide.
Moxie was there to support her through her struggles and eventually pulled her out of depression and kept her from committing suicide.
Christy stated that whenever she felt suicidal, Moxie would be staring at her as if she sensed what she felt. Because Christy loved animals, she couldn’t bear the thought of leaving Moxie.
Moxie helped Christy out of depression and encouraged her to try new things again. After her amputation, Christy was fitted with prosthetic legs. With the help of Moxie, she’s now able to walk again and became more independent. She even started playing sports again and became more active.
Christy joined the US Women’s Para Ice Hockey Team and had renewed faith in life.
Christy considers Moxie as her best friend and a friend that saved her life. She was pulled out of depression thanks to Moxie, and she was also encouraged by Moxie to become active again.
Here’s a video of Christy’s experience and a brief story on how Moxie saved her life and how she plans on paying it forward.
